Journey of Learning

In the journey of reinventing myself after a brain injury, I have learned that the road of life is about change.

It involves self awareness:

  • Become aware of your new self and recognize your life could be better.
  • Define your recovery process: what are my needs, what am I looking for, what can I do while I recover?
  • What can I do right now?
  • Recognize there is always someone else more in need than your self and do something to change that.

A process of learning to accept:

  • This is my situation for right now.
  • Ask yourself what you can do to enjoy some of this day?
  • Look for support and others in the same situation.
  • Find a way to tell your story through writing, art, blogging, talking, making a YouTube video or whatever means you find interesting.
  • Recognize your strengths and start building on them.
  • Recognize your weaknesses so you can prevent crashing on the couch.
  • Look for ways to make your disability into an asset.

Define how reinventing can improve your life:

  • Develop an action plan of how reinventing can improve your life.
  • Be prepared to learn how to make attitude adjustments.
  • Try many new experiences but be prepared for the universe to keep you within your boundaries.
  • Look for ways to enjoy your life and add more of those experiences.
  • Dream and imagine .. therein lies your hope.
  • Get comfortable with the unknown and life's setbacks, remember you are just recalculating

Take action:

  • Courage is not the opposite of fear, it is moving forward even though you may feel fear .. so move forward a tiny step at a time.
  • Know that reinventing is a process, a long journey that may or may not end. Enjoy it for what it is.
  • Ask for help when you feel alone or when you need it.

Be happy and content by trying some of the following:

  • Meditate
  • Write daily about what you are grateful for.
  • Talk and read about happiness.
  • Go outside everyday for at least 15 minutes.
  • Smile even when you don't feel like it.
  • Make an effort to socialize.
  • Always look for the good news and keep a positive attitude.
